etymology
Design has its origins in late 14th-century English as a verb meaning to designate from Latin "designare." Designate comes from "designo" (-are), meaning to mark, trace, indicate by designation, fix, determine, name, choose, serve as a name for.
From this same source comes the designation, which denotes indication, signification, naming, choice, denomination. "Dignes," an anagram (word or phrase made with the letters of another) derived from "digno" (-are), which means to make worthy, to grant (to one's own dignity), suggests a possible root for design.
